Sean G. Monts is a dedicated Career Switcher and Culinary Arts Instructor who began his teaching career in 2012 at Petersburg Public Schools and currently teaches for Richmond Public Schools. Over the course of 12 years, Monts has made a significant impact in the field of culinary education, specifically through his work with the ProStart Curriculum, which he has taught since the beginning of his career. Known for his innovative teaching methods, Monts engages students through the Kahoot online platform, promotes peer learning with a “students teach students” approach, and fosters creativity by encouraging students to “pick an ingredient and build on it.”In the past two years, Monts has achieved an impressive 100% passing rate on the ProStart Certificate of Achievement Examinations for Levels 1 and 2, helping over 30 students succeed despite the challenges of post-pandemic education. His commitment to student success extends beyond the classroom, as he regularly organizes college visits and employer interactions to help students achieve their post-secondary goals. Since joining Richmond Technical Center, he has taught more than 100 students, and his dedication has earned him recognition as a distinguished educator.With 10 years of experience as a ProStart proctor, Monts is a trusted figure in the culinary education community. In 2024, he was named Virginia ProStart Teacher of the Year for the 2024-2025 school year. That same year, he won a medal for a Chicken Fabrication Contest during the 2024 VATFACS Professional Development event. In February 2025, Monts was honored as a member of the inaugural class of 100 Men of Color in Virginia.Outside of his professional achievements, Monts is passionate about encouraging others through his podcast, Morning Meditation for Men, a Christian podcast focused on helping men embrace their authentic selves. He enjoys reading, writing, and traveling — especially cruising, where he has accumulated close to 1,000 days at sea. Monts is a devoted family man, married with four adult children. His contributions to culinary education and his unwavering dedication to his students continue to make a lasting impact.
