Dr. Jai Girard is the Director of Education and Workforce at the Virginia Restaurant, Lodging, and Travel Association. With over 15 years of extensive experience in the hospitality industry, Dr. Girard brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to her role. Dr. Girard's professional journey includes significant industry experience. She has worked for various hospitality organizations in Texas and founded a nonprofit organization. She has a strong academic background, having served as a Visiting Lecturer at James Madison University (JMU), where she taught a variety of courses in hospitality and tourism, including entrepreneurship, marketing, and ethics. During her tenure at JMU, she also advised the student chapter of the Club Managers Association of America and served as an Entrepreneurship Faculty Fellow with the Gilliam Center for Entrepreneurship.
She holds a PhD in Recreation, Park, and Tourism Sciences from Texas A&M University, where she also earned her Master of Science in Youth Development and a certificate in Community Development. Dr. Girard's research focused on topics such as food waste behaviors among consumers, social identity theory, empathy and mindfulness, and food waste tolerance.
Dr. Girard is a Certified Hospitality Educator and serves as the state coordinator for ServSafe and ProStart programs. She has presented at numerous educational conferences, including the World Food Travel Association in London, and has published several research papers.
In addition to her professional achievements, Dr. Girard is actively involved in community service and professional organizations. She has been recognized for her exceptional teaching abilities, with multiple student nominated awards, and continues to inspire both her former students and colleagues with her dedication and expertise.Dr. Girard was a military brat who primarily grew up in Okinawa, Japan. She and her wife enjoy traveling, exploring new cuisines, and volunteering with Jacob’s Chance. They also foster neonatal puppies through a local rescue.
